What conditions can an online doctor treat?

An online doctor can assess and often treat conditions diagnosed mainly from your history and visible signs: respiratory, urinary and skin infections, digestive complaints, allergies, migraines, sexual health concerns, and mild to moderate mental health problems. Conditions needing physical examination, laboratory tests or emergency care are identified early and referred to the right in-person service.[2] What can be prescribed varies by country across the EU, so the same consultation can end differently in different places; the doctor confirms what applies where you are.

What we treat online, and what needs in-person care

Usually handled online: most cold and flu, skin, digestive, sexual health and mental health problems, and the everyday majority of every category below. WHO’s telemedicine guidance makes the same point this page is built on: remote care adds value when it is matched to problems it can safely handle.[4]

Assessed online, but often needs in-person or urgent care: a few topics are covered by assessment guides whose job is routing you to the right door fast, because their dangerous causes cannot be excluded by video.

  • Chest pain: heart causes need an ECG and in-person tests, and cardiac-pattern pain is a 112 call
  • Heart palpitations: sustained, fast or fainting-associated palpitations need in-person heart tracing
  • Melanoma: a changing mole always needs urgent in-person dermoscopy
  • Deep vein thrombosis in pregnancy: one-sided leg swelling in pregnancy needs a same-day hospital scan

How an online consultation helps, whatever the condition

  • One doorway for everyday illness: instead of guessing which service you need, you describe the problem and the doctor does the sorting: treat now, test first, or refer on. That triage is itself the product.

What our doctors treat online

Across those categories, the everyday workload looks like this: winter infections and cold and flu illness; rashes, acne, eczema and other skin conditions assessed from photos; reflux, gut infections and IBS-type digestive problems; thrush, urinary infections and other sexual health concerns handled with complete discretion; and anxiety, low mood and sleep problems through structured mental health consultations. Around them sit hay fever and allergies, migraine, ear and eye infections, joint pain and travel mishaps like bites and stings: the ordinary illnesses that fill most clinic waiting rooms, moved to a video call.

Antibiotics deserve one sentence of honesty on a directory page: most everyday infections are viral, antibiotics do not work against viruses, and our doctors prescribe them only when there are genuine signs of bacterial infection, because careless prescribing makes these medicines weaker for everyone.[1][3]

When we refer you instead

Online medicine has edges, and we treat them as features rather than fine print. We refer or redirect you when a diagnosis needs examination, tests or imaging (new lumps, unexplained persistent pain or fever, changing moles); when treatment itself is physical (injections, drainage, procedures); when monitoring needs blood tests or equipment; for emergencies, always, including suspected sepsis, where fast recognition saves lives;[2] and for controlled medicines such as benzodiazepines and opioid painkillers, which are never prescribed online. In each case you leave the consultation knowing exactly where to go and why, which beats a wrong prescription every time.

When to get in-person care

Call 112 immediately for: crushing or spreading chest pain; face drooping, arm weakness or slurred speech; severe breathlessness or blue lips; heavy bleeding that will not stop; a sudden worst-ever headache; a seizure that does not stop; a rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass in someone feverish; signs of sepsis such as confusion, mottled skin or passing very little urine;[2] swelling of the lips or throat after a sting, food or medicine; and thoughts of harming yourself, where you can also find your national crisis helpline at findahelpline.com. No online service, ours included, is the right place for any of these.

Do I need a referral or registration to see an online doctor?

No. You choose a time, describe the problem, and speak to the doctor by video: there is no referral letter, no registration with a local practice, and no membership. That makes the service equally usable for residents, expats between health systems, and travellers taken ill far from their own doctor. Aftercare is part of the same consultation: you get a written plan, a review point where needed, and directions into local services whenever your problem needs them.

Do you treat children online?
