What Causes Skin Itching During Pregnancy

Your body undergoes a number of hormonal changes while pregnancy. In some situations, it can lead to having certain skin conditions to build up or make the existing ones more adverse.

As your baby grows, it is usual to build up itchiness on the skin near the abdomen, for this is the focal area of enlargement during pregnancy.

It is also common to observe mild itching in numerous other body parts during pregnancy. However, intense itching and irritation could be an indication of a more severe condition known as Obstetric Cholestasis (OC).

This infection usually happens to mothers in the last trimester of pregnancy. The final trimester begins from 27th weeks of pregnancy and onwards. OC is caused due to a decreased quantity of bile produced by your liver.

Severe itching is the most observed sign of Cholestasis that lead to potential risks if left unattended. Usually, OC happens on the palms of your hands or the bottom of your feet. Few other signs of Cholestasis are:

  • A loss of appetite
  • Jaundice (a yellowing of the skin)
  • Dark-colored urine and pale-colored stools
  • Feelings of nausea and sickness
