The Semaglutide Pill: What Wegovy Tablets Do, How to Take Them and Where to Get Them in Europe
The semaglutide pill is Wegovy 25 mg tablets, once-daily oral semaglutide authorised across the EU on 15 July 2026 for adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition. In the OASIS 4 trial it produced 13.6% mean weight loss over 64 weeks, close to the weekly injection; it is on sale in Germany and the UK.

- In the 64-week OASIS 4 trial, people on 25 mg lost 13.6% of their body weight on average against 2.2% on placebo (16.6% vs 2.7% if everyone had stayed on treatment); the Wegovy 2.4 mg injection produced 14.9% in STEP 1.
- Dose ladder: 1.5 mg, then 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg, at least one month on each step. Take it on waking after an 8-hour fast with a sip of water, then nothing by mouth for 30 minutes; a missed dose is skipped, never doubled.
- Most common side effects in OASIS 4: nausea 46.6% (18.6% on placebo) and vomiting 30.9% (5.9%). 6.9% stopped because of side effects, against 5.9% on placebo.
- On sale in Germany since 1 September 2026 (€172.73 for the two starting strengths, €233.23 for 9 mg, €277.60 at the 25 mg maintenance dose, not reimbursed) and in the UK since 6 July 2026 on private prescription; other EU countries follow from late 2026.
- Rybelsus is the same tablet licensed for type 2 diabetes, and Foundayo (orforglipron) is a competing pill with a positive EU opinion from October 2026. Semaglutide tablets are prescription-only everywhere in the EU; products sold without a prescription are not the licensed medicine.
Until the Wegovy tablet arrived, every GLP-1 medicine for weight loss was an injection. The semaglutide pill — sold as Wegovy tablets — is the first in Europe that you swallow, and it produces weight loss in the same range as the weekly Wegovy pen. This guide covers what it is, what the trials showed, how to take it so that it works, what it costs, and where in Europe it is on sale.
What is the semaglutide pill?
The semaglutide pill is a once-daily tablet containing semaglutide, the same active substance as the Wegovy and Ozempic injections. Novo Nordisk sells it under two names, for two purposes:
- Wegovy tablets (1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg) — authorised across the European Union on 15 July 2026 for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, sleep apnoea or prediabetes. This is what people mean by "the Wegovy pill" or "the semaglutide weight-loss pill".
- Rybelsus — the same molecule in tablets, authorised in the EU since April 2020 for type 2 diabetes. It was the world's first oral GLP-1, so the technology behind the Wegovy pill had years of real-world use before the weight-loss licence arrived.
There is no "Ozempic pill": Ozempic is the injectable brand for type 2 diabetes, and no tablet carries the name.
The Wegovy pill was approved in the United States on 22 December 2025, in the UK on 11 June 2026 and in the EU on 15 July 2026. Germany was the first EU country to put it in pharmacies, on 1 September 2026; Novo Nordisk has said further European launches will follow before the end of 2026, without naming countries.
How the semaglutide pill works: SNAC and the 1–2% rule
Semaglutide is a peptide; swallowed on its own, stomach acid and enzymes would destroy it before any reached your blood. The tablet solves this with an absorption enhancer called SNAC (salcaprozate sodium), which briefly raises the pH around the tablet, shields the semaglutide from the enzyme pepsin and makes the stomach wall slightly more permeable, so a usable fraction of the dose crosses into the bloodstream directly from the stomach. Two consequences follow, and they explain every rule about taking the pill:
- Only about 1–2% of the dose is absorbed. That is why the weight-loss tablet contains 25 mg while the weekly injection contains 2.4 mg; the amount reaching your blood is similar.
- Anything else in the stomach competes with absorption. Food, coffee, a large glass of water or another tablet taken at the same time cut absorption sharply. The SmPC states that waiting less than 30 minutes before eating or drinking decreases absorption of semaglutide.
Once absorbed, the pill works the same way as the injection: semaglutide activates GLP-1 receptors in the brain's appetite centres and the gut, so you feel full sooner and your stomach empties more slowly.
Oral semaglutide results: OASIS 4 in plain numbers
The European and US approvals rest on OASIS 4, a 64-week, double-blind trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine in September 2025. It enrolled 307 adults with obesity or overweight plus a weight-related condition, none with diabetes, randomised 2:1 to oral semaglutide 25 mg or placebo, all with lifestyle counselling.

Two comparisons give context. In OASIS 1, a 50 mg tablet produced 15.1% weight loss over 68 weeks — slightly more, but with longer-lasting nausea (19 days on average against 13 in OASIS 4), which is why Novo Nordisk licensed 25 mg. In STEP 1, the trial of the Wegovy 2.4 mg injection, the result was 14.9% at 68 weeks. The placebo-adjusted differences are almost identical: 11.4 percentage points for the 25 mg pill, 12.7 for the 50 mg pill, 12.4 for the injection.
So the pill and the pen produce the same order of weight loss — an inference from separate studies in similar populations, since no head-to-head trial has been run. Three-quarters of people on the tablets cleared the 5% threshold at which blood pressure, blood sugar and joint pain start to improve. One caveat: the heart-protection evidence for semaglutide (20% fewer major cardiovascular events in the SELECT trial) comes from the 2.4 mg injection; no outcome trial has been run with the tablet, and the EU licence for the tablet is for weight management only.

The choice comes down to temperament, not pharmacology: if you can wait half an hour before breakfast and coffee every morning, the tablet fits; if your mornings are chaotic or you take other medicines on waking, the injection asks less of your routine. People held back by needle anxiety now have an alternative to discuss with their doctor.
How to take the semaglutide pill so that it works
These rules come from the EU SmPC; following them is the difference between the 13.6% in the trial and a tablet that is poorly absorbed.
- Take it the moment you wake up, before anything else. The SmPC calls for a fasting period of at least 8 hours, which is why morning is the practical choice.
- Swallow it whole with a sip of plain water — up to about half a glass (120 ml). Do not split, crush or chew it. Larger volumes of water lower absorption.
- Then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking any other oral medicine. Coffee and tea count as drinks.
- Take it at the same time every day. Exposure depends on the conditions in your stomach each morning, so consistency matters more than it does with the injection.
- If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next tablet the following morning. Never take two in one day. If you have missed several days, ask your doctor whether to restart at the same dose.
- Keep it at room temperature, in its original blister, away from moisture.
Three practical points. Levothyroxine: the tablet raises its exposure and both want an empty stomach, so your doctor may re-check thyroid levels and set a schedule. Studies found no meaningful change in warfarin or digoxin levels, but the SmPC still advises extra INR checks when you start if you take warfarin or acenocoumarol; tell your doctor about any medicine with a narrow safety margin. Oral contraceptives are not affected by the tablet itself, but must be taken outside the 30-minute window; standard contraceptive advice applies if vomiting or diarrhoea strikes in the escalation weeks — use a barrier method for seven days after such an episode.
The dose ladder: 1.5 mg to 25 mg
| Step | Dose | Minimum time on this step |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1.5 mg once daily | One month |
| 2 | 4 mg once daily | One month |
| 3 | 9 mg once daily | One month |
| 4 | 25 mg once daily (maintenance) | Ongoing |
The starting doses let your gut adapt so that the maintenance dose is tolerable. Most people reach 25 mg from the start of month four (about week 13). The EU label lets a doctor hold you at a lower step if an increase is not tolerated; the US label says to delay the increase and, only if 25 mg itself is not tolerated, to consider switching to the 1.7 mg weekly pen. The maximum dose is 25 mg; there is no approved 50 mg weight-loss tablet.
Switching from the injection: if you are already on Wegovy 2.4 mg weekly, you can move directly to the 25 mg tablet, taking the first one a week after your last injection. Switching from Ozempic or a lower pen dose is not covered by the label and needs a doctor's judgement.
Side effects, and who should not take it
The side-effect profile is the one every GLP-1 user knows, because the molecule is the same. In OASIS 4, nausea affected 46.6% of people on the tablet (18.6% on placebo) and vomiting 30.9% (5.9%). Diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, reflux and headache were also more common. Almost all of it was mild to moderate, concentrated in the weeks after each dose increase, and faded. Serious adverse events were reported in 3.9% on the tablet and 8.8% on placebo — a small-trial finding, not evidence of protection — and the share who stopped because of side effects, 6.9% versus 5.9%, is close to the background rate. What helps: smaller meals, less fat and alcohol after each increase, and telling your doctor rather than pushing through persistent vomiting, which leads to dehydration and kidney strain.
Rarer risks, listed in the SmPC for every semaglutide product:
- Pancreatitis — severe, persistent abdominal pain radiating to the back needs urgent medical attention.
- Gallstones and gallbladder inflammation, more likely with rapid weight loss.
- Diabetic retinopathy worsening in people with type 2 diabetes and existing eye disease.
- NAION (non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy) — in June 2025 the EMA's safety committee concluded this sudden loss of vision in one eye is a very rare side effect of semaglutide, up to 1 in 10,000 users. Any sudden change in vision means stopping the medicine and seeing a doctor immediately.
- Low blood sugar if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea.
The tablet should not be used:
- if you are allergic to semaglutide or any ingredient — the EU label's only formal contraindication;
- in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or if you are planning a pregnancy — stop at least two months before trying to conceive;
- under 18 (the injection is licensed from 12; the tablet was not studied in adolescents);
- without specialist advice if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2 (a US label warning, not an EU contraindication), a history of pancreatitis, severe gastroparesis, or severe kidney or liver disease;
- alongside another GLP-1 medicine, including Rybelsus or Ozempic.
Wegovy pill vs Rybelsus: same molecule, different licence
Rybelsus and Wegovy tablets use identical semaglutide–SNAC technology. In December 2025 Rybelsus moved to a more bioavailable formulation (1.5, 4 and 9 mg round tablets replacing the 3, 7 and 14 mg ovals), and the EU product information now lists 25 mg and 50 mg Rybelsus strengths too. The difference is the licence: Rybelsus is authorised for type 2 diabetes, Wegovy tablets for weight management. At diabetes doses Rybelsus produced up to about 4 kg of weight loss in its PIONEER trials, which is why the 25 mg dose and the weight-management licence matter. Prescribing Rybelsus to someone without diabetes to lose weight is off-label; now that an on-label tablet exists, the licensed product is the right choice wherever it is on sale. If you were put on Rybelsus for weight loss before July 2026, ask your doctor about moving to the licensed product.
Wegovy pill vs Foundayo (orforglipron) vs Mounjaro
Foundayo (orforglipron), Eli Lilly's once-daily pill, received a positive CHMP opinion at the committee's October 2026 meeting (announced 16 October) for weight management and type 2 diabetes; the European Commission's decision usually follows within about two months, so an EU launch around the turn of the year is likely. It is already sold in the US (approved April 2026) and the UK (August 2026).
Orforglipron is a small molecule, not a peptide, which gives it one real advantage: it can be taken at any time of day, with or without food, with no 30-minute rule. The trade-off is efficacy: in the ATTAIN trials the EMA assessed, weight loss at 72 weeks at the highest dose was about 11.2% in people without diabetes (ATTAIN-1) and 9.6% in people with type 2 diabetes (ATTAIN-2), counting everyone regardless of adherence, against 13.6% for the semaglutide pill. Foundayo buys convenience for people who cannot manage the fasting rule; on current evidence the semaglutide pill shows larger weight loss in its trials, though no head-to-head trial exists. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) remains the most effective licensed option, with 20.9% mean weight loss at the top dose in SURMOUNT-1, but it is a weekly injection with no tablet form.
What the semaglutide pill costs
No European health system reimburses the Wegovy tablet as of October 2026. France, the only EU country so far that reimburses the Wegovy injection and Mounjaro (since 15 June 2026, for BMI 40 or more, or 35 with a complication, after failed dietary management), has not yet launched the tablet. So the price you pay is the pharmacy price.
- Germany (on sale since 1 September 2026): €172.73 for 30 tablets of 1.5 mg or 4 mg and €233.23 for 9 mg. The 25 mg maintenance strength became orderable on 1 October 2026 at €277.60 for 30 tablets — the price of the 2.4 mg pen. A Novo Nordisk spokesperson put the German pharmacy price at €170–€280 a month depending on dose. Statutory insurers class weight-loss medicines as lifestyle drugs and do not pay.
- United Kingdom (private prescription since 6 July 2026): Novo Nordisk has not published a UK list price, so providers set their own — typically about £100–£150 a month on the starting doses and £150–£270 at maintenance, usually including the online consultation. NHS supply would need a NICE recommendation, which has not been issued.
- United States (for reference): $149–$299 a month by dose through Novo Nordisk's own self-pay pharmacy, against a list price of $1,349.
Expect the first year to cost roughly €3,000 in Germany at current prices. Anyone quoting far less, or offering "semaglutide tablets" without a prescription, is not selling the licensed medicine: no compounded semaglutide tablet is licensed anywhere in the EU, tablets sold without a prescription are illegal and almost always counterfeit, and none carry the SNAC absorption technology that makes the real product work.
Where the semaglutide pill is available in Europe
EU authorisation is one decision; putting a medicine into a country's pharmacies is another, because each member state settles price and reimbursement status first. As of late October 2026:
| Country | Status |
|---|---|
| Germany | On sale since 1 September 2026, private pay |
| United Kingdom | On sale since 6 July 2026, private prescription only |
| Denmark | Parallel-imported packs listed from late September 2026; no national launch announced |
| Italy | Authorised; no launch date announced, AIFA classification and pricing pending (availability expected 2027) |
| France | Authorised; national launch not yet announced (the injection has been reimbursed since June 2026) |
| Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Austria, Portugal, Greece, Ireland | Authorised; national launch not yet announced |
Table checked 23 October 2026; updated monthly. Where the tablet has not launched, a pharmacy will usually be unable to fill the prescription; some countries allow a named-patient import of an EU-authorised medicine, but it is slow and not something to rely on while travelling.
Travelling in Europe with the semaglutide pill
For travel the tablet is simpler than the pen: pens need a fridge until first use and a cool bag on long journeys; tablets go in your washbag. Three things to get right:
- Time zones. Take the tablet when you wake up in local time and keep the 30-minute rule; a few hours' shift is irrelevant to a medicine with a one-week half-life. Never double up to "catch up".
- Prescriptions across borders. Under EU Directive 2011/24/EU a prescription issued in one member state can be dispensed in another, provided the medicine is marketed there. In October 2026 a Wegovy-tablet prescription written in Germany can be filled in Germany, but not routinely in Spain or Greece. Carry enough tablets for the whole trip plus a margin, in the original pack, with a copy of the prescription.
- Heat and alcohol. GLP-1 medicines blunt thirst as well as hunger; heat, less eating and more drinking is the classic route to dehydration. Drink to a schedule rather than to thirst.
What happens when you stop
Semaglutide treats appetite regulation; it does not reset it. In the STEP 1 extension study, people who stopped the injection regained about two-thirds of the weight they had lost within a year, and there is no biological reason to expect the tablet to differ. The medicine is licensed as long-term treatment; plan from the start either to continue indefinitely or to step down with a structured diet, exercise and weight-monitoring plan.
Who it is for, and how a doctor decides
The licence is clear: adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. A doctor assessing you will want your height, weight, waist measurement and weight history; a medical history covering pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, thyroid cancer in the family, eye disease, kidney function and pregnancy plans; a full medicine list; recent blood tests where available; and a frank conversation about your mornings, because the tablet only works for people who keep to the routine. A BMI of 26 with no weight-related condition is not an indication, and a responsible doctor will say so.
Who can prescribe the semaglutide pill in Europe
The tablet is prescription-only in every EU country and the UK, and a doctor must assess you before any decision about it. The legitimate routes are your GP, an obesity or endocrinology clinic, or a regulated online doctor service that assesses you properly. In Germany and the UK a prescription can be dispensed today; elsewhere you will be offered the injection, or asked to wait, until the tablet launches nationally.
If you live in or are travelling through one of the European countries Mobi Doctor serves, you can speak to a licensed EU-registered doctor over video about medical weight-loss treatment. The doctor makes every clinical and prescribing decision; if a prescription is appropriate, it goes to a pharmacy you choose. Mobi Doctor does not sell or dispense medicines, and no doctor can promise a particular medicine before assessing you. Read more about how doctors approach GLP-1 medicines for weight loss and the current Wegovy and Mounjaro options.
Severe abdominal pain, vomiting that stops you keeping fluids down, or a sudden change in vision while on semaglutide is an emergency: call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department.
Frequently asked questions
Is the semaglutide pill as effective as the injection?
Close to it: 13.6% over 64 weeks for the 25 mg tablet in OASIS 4 against 14.9% over 68 weeks for the 2.4 mg injection in STEP 1, from separate trials — no head-to-head study has been published.
Is there an Ozempic pill?
No. Ozempic is the injectable semaglutide brand for type 2 diabetes. The oral forms are Rybelsus (diabetes) and Wegovy tablets (weight management); nothing sold as an "Ozempic pill" is a licensed medicine.
Can I drink coffee after taking the Wegovy tablet?
Only after 30 minutes. Coffee, tea, juice and food all reduce absorption if taken sooner. Take the tablet on waking, wait half an hour, then have breakfast and coffee as usual.
Is Rybelsus the same as the Wegovy pill?
Same molecule and tablet technology, different licence. Rybelsus is approved for type 2 diabetes; Wegovy tablets are approved for weight management. Using Rybelsus for weight loss is off-label.
How much does the semaglutide pill cost in Europe?
In Germany, €172.73 a month for the two starting doses, €233.23 for 9 mg and €277.60 at the 25 mg maintenance dose, all unreimbursed. In the UK, about £100–£270 a month privately depending on dose and provider. Other EU prices are set country by country at launch.
Which European countries sell the Wegovy pill right now?
Germany (since 1 September 2026) and the UK (since 6 July 2026). In Denmark parallel-imported packs have been listed since late September 2026; every other EU country is authorised but awaiting a national launch, which Novo Nordisk says will follow in further markets before the end of 2026.
What happens if I take two Wegovy tablets by mistake?
Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea become more likely. Do not take the next day's dose early, drink fluids, and contact your doctor or a poison centre if vomiting persists.
