Viking's ocean fleet is adults-only, excursion-included and demographically the most uniform in cruising: overwhelmingly 55-plus, itinerary-driven, port-intensive. Its inspection record is excellent on both sides of the Atlantic — several CDC 100s and consistent SHIPSAN As — while Viking Mars and Viking Polaris each logged one 2025 outbreak. Port-intensive itineraries mean more shore meals than most lines: on Viking, food-safety exposure is as much about the destination as the ship, which is where our port-city pages earn their keep.

Sailing healthy with Viking

Viking's included-excursion model means every day is an active day: cobbled old towns, museum miles, vineyard terraces. The fleet's health profile is less about the ship — new, uncrowded, consistently well-inspected — and more about cumulative exertion on 55-plus knees and hearts. Pace the programme; skipping one walking tour is cheaper than limping through five. Expedition itineraries add remoteness: evacuation from Antarctic or Great Lakes positions is measured in days, which makes the pre-cruise medical review genuinely load-bearing.

Before you sail with Viking

Two things are worth doing in the fortnight before boarding: check the pre-cruise health guidance — especially if you are pregnant, manage a chronic condition, or the line's terms ask for a fit-to-travel confirmation — and check the live conditions in your ports. Talk to a doctor before you sail →

Frequently asked questions

Which Viking ship has the best health inspection score?

Viking Neptune currently holds the fleet's best CDC score in this index: 100/100, inspected 2025-04-22. 9 Viking ships hold a current EU SHIPSAN grade A.

Has Viking had norovirus outbreaks recently?

The CDC log shows 2 gastrointestinal outbreaks on Viking ships in 2024–2026: Viking Polaris (2025, Norovirus), Viking Mars (2025, Norovirus). Outbreak counts reflect itinerary length and passenger profile as much as ship standards — see the full log for context.

Do I need medical clearance to sail with Viking?

Like most major lines, Viking requires a doctor's confirmation for defined situations — typically pregnancy (not carried when entering the 24th week by voyage end), oxygen or dialysis use, and recent major surgery or cardiac events; exact rules are in the line's terms. A Mobi Doctor physician can assess you online and provide documentation where clinically appropriate.
